Methodology
Research Approach
The Crip Count employs a comprehensive research methodology to track disabled representation among writers, directors, and producers at five major international film festivals: Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Venice, and TIFF.
Data Collection
Our data collection process involves multiple sources and verification methods:
-
Review of official festival program announcements and credits
-
Analysis of publicly available biographical information
-
Direct outreach to filmmakers and production companies
-
Consultation with disability advocacy organizations in the film industry
-
Cross-referencing with industry databases and press materials
Inclusion Criteria
Creatives are included in our count based on the following criteria:
-
Self-identification as disabled in public statements or biographical materials
-
Documented disability status in press coverage or interviews
-
Confirmation from representatives or production teams when available
We respect individuals' privacy and only include information that has been made public by the creatives themselves or with their consent.
Scope and Limitations
This study focuses on key creative roles (writers, directors, producers) in official festival selections. We acknowledge that our count may be incomplete, as not all disabled creatives choose to publicly disclose their disability status. The numbers presented represent confirmed cases and should be considered minimum counts rather than comprehensive totals.
Annual Updates
The Crip Count is conducted annually, with data collection beginning after each festival's official program announcement and continuing through the festival dates. Our methodology is reviewed and refined each year to improve accuracy and comprehensiveness.
